The Slave Leia costume refers to the bikini-style outfit worn by Princess Leia Organa when she was captured by Jabba the Hutt in Return of the Jedi. The costume was worn by actress Carrie Fisher and stuntwoman Tracy Eddon and was created by costumer designers Aggie Guerard Rodgers and Nilo Rodis-Jamero, inspired by the works of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta’s Egyptian Queen. Star Wars creator George Lucas requested the costume in part based on Fisher’s complaints about the lack of interesting costumes in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Wow okay so I need to comment on that last sentence.

Star Wars creator George Lucas requested the costume in part based on Fisher’s complaints about the lack of interesting costumes in A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

Carrie Fisher complained that she didn’t like her costumes (that are almost completely white, the only exception being the red dress she wears on Bespin which is covered by a light grey tunic so it’s not really surprising she might complain) and you respond by putting her in a metal bikini? If Fisher wanted a more interesting outfit, would she have really wanted this one? Fisher originally wasn’t comfortable with the idea of wearing this outfit. She felt she had to diet and exercise to look good while wearing it and she specifically comments at some point (I can’t recall if it’s in a commentary or documentary or what) that in the scene where she’s lounging on Jabba she made a point of sucking her stomach in so it would look better.
So despite the fact that Fisher wanted a more interesting outfit, what came about wasn’t an outfit she was comfortable in or enthusiastic about, which is what one would imagine would happen when an actor asks for something more interesting. It’s something she was uncomfortable with wearing but would be really interesting for the male fans. Which of course is all that really mattered, right?
Despite the fact that I find this completely unsurprising, does anyone have a source for that last statement? I don’t remember hearing that before, but it could be I wasn’t paying attention. I also haven’t watched any bonus features in a while so it could be I’ve just forgotten it. Either way, I’d like to know where this information came from.
